Papers, 1974-1975.

Consists of correspondence, photographs, and newspaper clippings relating to the preparation and opening of the Loan Exhibit of South Jersey Turned Chairs, 1775-1925. Also included are articles about New Jersey chairs and a list of Ware chairs and their respective owners. The material compiled for the exhibit provides a history of the Ware family and their chairmaking activities along with a discussion of the influences of Maskell Ware and Solomon Fussell on New Jeresy cabinetmaking. The photographs are of rushed chairs, rockers, and stools made by the Wares.

Margaretta D. Wood (Mrs. Richard D. Wood) was co-chair of a loan exhibit of South Jersey turned chairs held at the Museum of Glass, Wheaton Village, Millville, N.J. The exhibit was sponsored by the Cumberland County Historical Society. Benno M. Forman assisted Wood in locating chairs for the exhibit and obtaining a loan from Winterthur Museum. Benno Forman (1930-1982) was a scholar of the American decorative arts. A native of Virginia, he served as a research fellow and teaching associate for the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture. He was also an adjunct assistant professor in the Art History Department at the University of Delaware. He was an authority on American furniture of the 17th and early 18th centuries.
